Understanding the Difference: Lab Diamonds vs. Natural Diamonds
Share
When it comes to choosing a diamond, the decision often narrows down to two primary types: lab diamonds and natural diamonds. While they may appear similar at first glance, these two types of diamonds have distinct origins, characteristics, and implications for buyers. Let’s dive into the key differences to help you make an informed choice.
Origin
Natural Diamonds: These diamonds are formed over many years deep within the Earth’s mantle. They are created under extreme pressure and heat, which transforms carbon into the sparkling gemstones we cherish. Natural diamonds are mined from the Earth, a process that involves significant planning and labor besides for the fact that high quality diamonds are extremely rare.
Lab Diamonds: Also known as synthetic or cultured diamonds, lab diamonds are created in controlled environments using advanced technological processes that replicate the natural conditions under which diamonds form. The two primary methods for creating lab diamonds are High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). Both processes produce diamonds that are chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds.
Cost
One of the most significant differences between lab diamonds and natural diamonds is the price. Lab diamonds are typically 80-90% less expensive than their natural counterparts. This cost-effectiveness can be appealing, especially as there are practically no methods to tell them apart by the naked eye.
Quality and Composition
In terms of quality, lab diamonds and natural diamonds are graded using the same criteria—cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Both types of diamonds can exhibit a range of qualities, from flawless to included. Importantly, both types of diamonds are real diamonds, with the same physical and chemical properties.
However, lab diamonds can sometimes be produced with fewer inclusions, meaning they can offer a higher quality for a lower price. Moreover, lab diamonds can be created with specific characteristics in mind, allowing for more customization in terms of color and clarity.
Here at Set In Stone we only use the highest quality lab grown diamonds, F/G color plus and VS quality plus.
Resale Value
When it comes to resale value, natural diamonds tend to hold their value better than lab diamonds. Lab diamonds are more affordable, but they tend to have lower to no resale value compared to natural diamonds.
